What is a plant-based diet and why should you try it?
Last Sunday, July 14, Novak Djokovic won his fifth Wimbledon title, defeating Switzerland’s Roger Federer in a stunning five-set, 57-minute match, playing the longest Wimbledon singles final ever.
A few days before the final, Djokovic praised a plant-based diet as the secret to his rapid recovery time and excellent health, while remaining careful not to call himself a vegan.
But what is this nutritional method all about?
A plant-based diet focuses primarily on foods that come from plants. This includes not only fruits and vegetables, but also nuts, seeds, oils, whole grains, legumes, and beans.
Adopting this doesn’t mean you’re going vegetarian or vegan, or that you’ll never eat meat or dairy again. It simply means that you’re making a greater effort to get some of your food from plant sources.
By choosing to eat a plant-based diet, you’re taking a huge step toward improving your overall well-being, fueling your energy stores, and preventing chronic disease, as research has shown that eating the right foods can help you live longer, protect the environment, and reduce your risk of disease.
If you’re not sure where to start, read on to learn about key nutrients and their plant-based options that you can easily incorporate into your diet:
1. Iron
Red blood cells love iron, and a little bit of dried beans, peas, lentils, whole grains, broccoli, dark green leafy vegetables like spinach or kale, or red berries can give your body a big boost of iron. Luckily, we can help you with that, as our Kyäni Sunsire product is packed with valuable vegetables and fruits like Alaskan blueberries, raspberries, broccoli, spinach, and kale. Sounds good, right?
2. Calcium
To keep our bones strong, we need calcium. Most people get it from milk and dairy products. If you were to replace these with some plant sources, we recommend dark green leafy vegetables, such as kale and broccoli. Other sources of calcium include cereals, soy milk, and tofu.
3. Vitamin D
Vitamin D is important for bone and immune health and for preventing inflammation. But it’s tricky because it’s not naturally found in many foods. If you spend a lot of time in the sun, you can get enough vitamin D, but it can also be found in soy and rice milks and cereals. However, if you don’t consume these types of products and don’t have the opportunity to get enough sun, you may need a vitamin D supplement, and you know where you can find it? Yes, in our Kyäni Sunset product!
4. Vitamin B12
Vitamin B-12 supports the body’s nerve and blood cells. Since it’s found almost exclusively in animal products, it’s the nutrient that people who follow a plant-based diet need to pay the most attention to. It’s found in adequate amounts in milk, eggs, and other dairy products, but it’s also a good idea to eat foods fortified with vitamin B12, such as yeast flakes, cereals, breads, and more.
5. Protein
We need protein for the health of our skin, bones, muscles, and organs. It is clearly found in meat, but of course you can also get the necessary amount from plants if you add legumes, lentils, nuts, seeds, and whole grains to your meals throughout the day.
6. Zinc
Zinc is essential for the functioning of over 300 enzymes in the body. It plays an important role in maintaining a healthy immune system, energy metabolism, blood sugar balance and brain function. But do you know where it is found? Pumpkin seeds, pomegranates, blackberries and noni fruit. Speaking of noni, did you know that this amazing fruit is the main ingredient in our Kyäni Nitro products?
7. Iodine
We need iodine to make thyroid hormones, which regulate our metabolism, growth, and function of key organs. Just 1/4 teaspoon of iodized salt a day provides a significant amount of iodine. But if you’re exclusively using sea salt or other salt that isn’t iodized, make sure you’re getting some form of iodine. Luckily, seaweed is packed with it, and lima beans and prunes are also great plant-based sources.
Whether you follow a plant-based diet or not, adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet is always a good idea. Trust me, your body will thank you.
